The tremendous attacks on Job’s family, wealth, and health caused him to question God’s ways. But in God’s answer, Job got more than he bargained for—and for that, we should be grateful. God’s answer from within the whirlwind speaks to every troubled soul caught in an unexpected storm of life.

My wife and I were staying at a mountain resort when the air became heavy and still. Once puffy-white cumulonimbus clouds grew bigger and bigger until their bottoms turned dark. A monstrous storm was moving across the Hudson River Valley, headed straight toward us. As lightning flashed and thunder shook windows, the power went out, and there we were—in the dark with a front-row seat to nature’s display of God’s majesty, power, and strength.

We sat mesmerized, praising God, “You are awesome. Lord, You are righteous and glorious! There is none like You, who “makes the clouds His chariot, who walks on the wings of the wind” (Psalm 104:3) and “a path for the thunderbolt” (Job 38:25). The storm lasted for hours, but we went to bed and slept like little lambs, blessed with a fresh revelation of the creative power and dominion of our God.

Dear saint, have you seen God’s strength and power amidst your stormy situation? If not, ask Him to reveal them to you. It may come quietly through His Word or an unexpected change of circumstance, but God will answer. And when He does, may you find comfort in the knowledge of the sovereign Lord’s control over all.

Awaiting His Return,
