Hebrews 12:1
“Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.”
Runners cheered on by a great crowd as they race toward the finish line is a fantastic picture of our Christian life! But as in any race, finishing well depends on being as unencumbered as possible.
The moment we came to Christ, He began freeing us from the heaviest sins that weighed upon us or tripped us up. These things are no longer an issue in our lives. But what about the sins we have grown accustomed to? Isn’t it true that the things we trip over are usually the small stuff we’ve casually left lying around?
Likewise, the sins we think are minor, and therefore no big deal, are the ones most likely to hinder us spiritually. Laziness, a critical spirit, gossip, lustful looks, harsh words spoken in the heat of the moment, petty jealousies, and so on. Sin is sin. What we justify is as grievous as the most flagrant of transgressions. Jesus died on the cross for every sin—nothing should rank as minor in our estimation.
How are you doing in the race God has set before you? Have you thoughtlessly allowed sin to remain because you think no one sees it? If so, the God who died is the same God who sees. Thankfully, He is also the same God who promises to cleanse and forgive when we come to Him in repentance!
Awaiting His Return,
