Keytesville, MO — The Chariton County Sheriff’s Office announced that K9 officer Charco will soon receive a custom-fitted bullet- and stab-protective vest thanks to a donation from the nonprofit Vested Interest in K9s, Inc.

Donation Details

The vest for K9 Charco is being sponsored by Jason Tabor of Colorado Springs, CO and will be embroidered with the tribute, “In honor of Sensei Pena.” Delivery of the custom armor is expected within ten weeks. The Chariton County Sheriff’s Office says the new vest will provide added protection during Charco’s law enforcement duties throughout Chariton County and nearby areas.

About Vested Interest in K9s, Inc.

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2009 with a mission to provide bullet- and stab-protective vests and related assistance to law enforcement K9s across the United States. Since its inception, the organization has donated more than 6,225 vests valued at over $6.9 million to K9 teams in all 50 states through private and corporate donations.

The vests are U.S.-made, National Institute of Justice (NIJ) certified, and custom-fitted for each dog. On average, each vest weighs between 4–5 pounds and carries a five-year warranty.

The Importance of K9 Body Armor

K9 officers like Charco perform essential duties that include tracking suspects, locating missing persons, detecting narcotics, and protecting deputies on potentially dangerous calls. These responsibilities place K9s in high-risk situations where body armor can be lifesaving. A properly fitted, NIJ-certified vest significantly improves a K9’s chance of returning home safely after every shift.

Program Eligibility and How to Help

The Vested Interest program is open to U.S.-based law enforcement dogs that are at least 20 months old and are actively employed and certified with a law enforcement or related agency. K9s whose vests have expired are also eligible for replacement vests. There are an estimated 30,000 law enforcement K9s serving across the United States.

Donations to Vested Interest in K9s are tax-deductible. A single donation of $1,050 will sponsor one vest; each vest has an average value of $1,800. To learn more or to donate, visit vik9s.org or call (508) 824-6978. Contributions may also be mailed to:

Sheriff’s Office Recent Activity

Alongside the announcement about Charco’s vest, the Chariton County Sheriff’s Department reported a successful overnight response to a call about suspicious persons. Deputies located a stolen firearm and a meth pipe containing methamphetamine. Sheriff Billups commended the team’s proactive work during a busy summer period and expressed appreciation to the Missouri Department of Conservation for assistance on the scene.

Community Support and Recognition

Local residents have responded positively to the news of Charco’s upcoming vest and to the work of the Chariton County Sheriff’s Office. The department thanked sponsor Jason Tabor and Vested Interest in K9s for their support. Community contributions like these not only protect K9 officers but also strengthen ties between citizens and local law enforcement.

As funding challenges continue for many small departments, community donations and nonprofit partnerships remain vital to ensuring the safety of both human and K9 officers serving the public.
