Dr. James Lee “Doc” Sutton, 77, of Marceline, Missouri, passed away peacefully at his home.

Born May 11, 1948, in Macon, Missouri, Doc was the son of Paul Sutton and Irma “Pat” (Whitsitt) Sutton. He graduated from Macon High School, earned a Bachelor of Science in Zoology from the University of Missouri-Columbia, and later achieved his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Known affectionately throughout Marceline as simply “Doc,” he served his community for many years as a trusted and caring dentist. His profession not only earned him his nickname but also the lasting respect and affection of his patients, friends, and neighbors. Even after he retired from dentistry, the name “Doc” and the respect he earned from his patients and friends remained a lasting part of who he was.

He was happiest in conversation, swapping stories, offering advice, and sharing the pearls of wisdom for which he was well known. A passionate golfer, he found joy and purpose on the course, whether playing with friends, coaching his children, or mentoring young golfers. His time on the greens reflected his greater purpose: helping others grow in both skill and character.

A man of unwavering faith, Doc was deeply devoted to studying scripture and lived his beliefs with humility and conviction. He cherished the promises of his Savior and shared that faith readily with those willing to listen, as reflected in one of his favorite verses:

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.” – Proverbs 3:5-7

He is survived by his daughter, Jaime (Sutton) Hogerty and her husband Chris Hogerty of Columbia, Missouri; his son, Eric Sutton and his wife Erin Woltkamp of Longmont, Colorado; four beloved grandchildren, Quin and Leo Hogerty, and Rowan and Elliot Sutton; his brother, John Sutton and wife Carol Sutton; his sister, Gina Sutton Hess and partner Tim Fleener; and many nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends across Marceline and Macon. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Pat Sutton.

A memorial service will be held at Delaney Funeral Home (date and time to be announced). Memorial contributions may be made to the Missouri Junior Golf Foundation in honor of Doc’s lifelong love of the game and his mentorship of young players.

Doc will be remembered for his storytelling, his steadfast guidance, his quick wit, and his gift for making every conversation both meaningful and heartfelt.
