Exodus 33:18
“…Please, show me Your glory.”
The burning bush, the parting of the Red Sea, and the drowning Pharaoh’s army were not enough. Nor the cloud by day and pillar of fire by night or water supernaturally flowing from a rock. Not even God descending upon Mount Sinai amidst lightning, thundering, and fiery smoke could do it. Despite the incredible signs of God’s power that Moses witnessed, his heart still cried, “It’s not enough.”
Throughout the ages, people have pleaded, “God, just give me a sign.” Not Moses. He desperately wanted something more. He wanted to see God in all His glory—the fulness of His splendor and majesty.
We read in Exodus 33:20 that no man can see God and live. Yet God made a way to satisfy Moses’ desire by placing him in the cleft of a rock, tenderly covered by His protective hand. As God passed by, His hand remained until the moment Moses was allowed to see the atmospheric disturbance, the afterglow, if you will, of God’s presence. A sweet dissatisfaction drove Moses’ asking. Was he bold? Yes. Confident, yet respectful? Absolutely. And God responded by showing His servant what no one had ever seen.
Moses’s near encounter with God was the product of their intimate relationship. Isn’t it true that the more we know of God, the more we desire to know? The full realization of our union with Him will come one day, but until then, I urge you to prayerfully implore, “More, please,” as you press nearer and nearer into fellowship with Him.
Awaiting His Return,
