Born January 11, 1932, in rural Waverly, he was the son of the late John Adron Weedin and Gladys Marie Burgess Weedin. Norman lived in the Lafayette County area most of his life and was a 1949 graduate of Waverly High School. On August 14, 1952, he married Marie Kathryn Stark and they were blessed with 71 years of marriage until she passed away on September 2, 2023.
Norman was drafted into the United States Army on September 12, 1952, and completed basic training at Ft. Bliss in Texas. He served in Japan from March 1953 to August 1954 with the 507th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion. He was honorably discharged to the United States Army Reserve on August 11, 1954, having attained the rank of Sergeant First Class. Throughout the years that followed, he maintained friendships with five of his army buddies, visiting them many times, and was the last one of those five to survive. A special time for Norman in reflecting on his service to our country was to be a part of the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. with his brother, Glenn.
In his early years, and even after being discharged from the Army, Norman worked as a bulldozer operator. He later worked for Ford Motor Company, Standard Oil Company, and his working career concluded with being a superintendent with Neighbor’s Construction where he worked for over 30 years.
Norman was an active part of the Waverly community where he was a member of the Waverly Jaycee’s, assisting with the Waverly Apple Jubilee and refurbishing the grandstand, and served on the committee that formed the Waverly Swimming Pool, just to name a few. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, helping design and construct the new fellowship hall of the church, as well as serving on boards and committees through the years.
Survivors include one daughter, Diane Schmidt (Mark) of Waverly; three grandchildren, Erin Marie Harris (John) of Waverly, David Niederjohn (Michaela) of Grand Pass, and Luke Schmidt of Waverly; his great-grandchildren, Hunter Scott Harris, Nora Marie Harris, Georgia Lee Niederjohn, and Lydia Jane Niederjohn; a sister-in-law, Sandy Stark of Lexington; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and other extended family.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by four brothers: Douglas, Kenneth, Glenn and Morris Weedin; and his sister, Frances Ann Hilbrenner.
