Luke 2:13-14
“And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying: ‘Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men!” When an angel announced the birth of Christ to shepherds tending their sheep, it’s certain they were shocked to the point of fear. Yet his appearance was merely a preamble to something wonderfully extravagant. Without warning, a vast, innumerable heavenly host suddenly appeared, their worship bursting forth, giving “glory to God in the highest.”
First Timothy 3:16 tells us, “God was manifested in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen by angels.” The original Greek language strongly suggests that when Jesus was born, it was the first time angels had seen this Savior—Christ the Lord. They had seen Him enthroned in heaven, but never like this—God, their Creator, now veiled in human skin—and they gawked with wide eyes and open mouths.
Jesus Christ came as a baby to live, breathe, and experience all we do. When we are hurt, Jesus resonates with sympathy. Confused? Jesus brings an answer. When we’re tired, Jesus understands because He knows what it’s like and becomes our strength. In the scientific world, this is called sympathetic resonance. It’s an acoustical term that means if you strike a tuning fork and hold it near another, the unstruck fork will vibrate in response. That is our God come in the flesh, the Babe, the Savior of the world.
The Messiah came to save what was lost, to make peace by taking away the enmity between God and man, and to give peace to those of His goodwill. If the angels, who are not recipients of such extravagance, could not restrain their praise, neither should we!
