You may not know it, but in Japan, there is a mental illness called ‘Paris syndrome’ that affects a couple of dozen Japanese tourists per year, whose ‘highly idealized image’ of the ‘City of Light’ clashes harshly with reality. The triggers for this severe culture shock condition are that Paris is dirtier, more crowded, and grittier than expected, and the locals are rude and unfriendly. The symptoms include acute delusions, hallucinations, anxiety, derealization, depersonalization, dizziness, tachycardia, sweating, vomiting, and feelings of persecution. Part of this cultural shock can be attributed to the French Socialist party, which has controlled the city for over 25 years, and apparently nothing is going to change….
