Matthew 26:41 “Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
When Jesus faced the agony of the cross, He understood temptation’s stealth and insidiousness in times of difficulty better than you and I ever will. Temptation is the devil’s handiwork, and he uses it to great effect. Whenever we’re spiritually sleepy, full of fear, and seeking ease instead of godliness, fleshly temptations can easily gain the upper hand.
Some like to blame God for allowing certain things to tempt them, yet Isaiah 6:3 declares, “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts.” It is our own desires that lead us astray, not God (James 1:13-14). But God does test and try His people much like a metal refiner tests for purity. And when He does, we are commanded not to respond with doubt, unbelief, waywardness, or outright refusal to obey His Word. Such action provokes Him to act. God is loving, but He is also just, and will discipline His people as any father would.
Did your mom or dad ever say, “This is going to hurt me more than you” when they disciplined you? Your heavenly Father feels the same way. He doesn’t want to chastise you any more than you want to discipline your child, and yet He must if we allow our flesh free rein.
Dear saint, remain alert! Beware of anything offering momentary relief. Stand guard against devilish lies that sow doubt and unbelief. Instead, grab hold of God’s Word and rely upon His promises. Determine to obey Him, and He will be your strength throughout your days. Always watch and pray.
