Psalm 27:10 “When my father and my mother forsake me, then the LORD will take care of me.”

Perhaps you’ve seen those television commercials showing emaciated animals as they look into the camera, gaunt and helpless. Those images crush my heart. Such injury should never take place in the world that God has created. But more appalling is when we see the neglect or terrible mistreatment of children. Above all living creatures, God would have us more concerned about an innocent child being loved, protected, and provided for.

The value of a child is impossible to calculate. Remember that God came into this world as an infant, which tells us a great deal about His estimation of human life, especially children. When the psalmist writes, “when my father and my mother forsake me, then the Lord will take care of me,” he announces a statement of fact. Whatever the situation or trauma that was inflicted, even if our mother and father forsake us, the Lord, our God, will stand with us and be our support and defender.

How can we overcome such abuse? By meditating on the fact that the world may hurt and abandon you, but the Lord never will. When natural ties between parent and child fail, the bonds formed with our Lord will hold fast. He will take us into His care and keeping.

Dear Christian, each of us has a story to tell, and no matter how hurtful that story may be, let us declare today that it no longer has the power to depress us or blind us, to the joy of knowing the God who will never leave us or forsake us.
