From standout performances in cross country to classroom projects and community support, area schools have been busy both on and off the field. Here’s a look at highlights from Northwestern, Salisbury, Brunswick, and Keytesville, with Thunder football wrapping up this week’s roundup.
Northwestern R-I
Northwestern’s Eagles continue their cross country season, with Noah, Kypton, and Madi all posting improved times at the Salisbury 3,500-meter run. The district also announced a transportation change beginning September 15, as the Route CC bridge closure will require families from the Sumner area to use Highway E. Meanwhile, the district’s staff were celebrated Friday with treats from the monthly “snack cart,” this month sponsored by UpRiver Shops.
Salisbury R-IV
The Salisbury Panthers picked up a strong win in high school football action on September 5, drawing praise from fans. However, due to a shortage of players at Harrisburg, the junior varsity football matchup scheduled for September 8 was canceled, with the junior high contest still set for 6 p.m. that evening.
Salisbury cross country will attend the Highland Invitational on September 9 and the Chillicothe Invitational on September 25. At the grade school level, SES students are enjoying new opportunities to try fresh fruits and vegetables several times each week thanks to a grant program.
Brunswick R-II
It has been a busy week at Brunswick R-II with both athletics and academics taking the spotlight. The Lady Thunder varsity softball team hit the road Friday night to face Green City, while the junior high squad is preparing for the Salisbury Middle School Invitational on September 13 at Potts Park. Brunswick will also host the CLAA Conference Softball Tournament on September 20, drawing teams from Higbee, Northwestern, Tina-Avalon/Southwest, and more.
In the classroom, Brunswick’s Ag Structures students had the chance to learn hands-on electrical wiring with guest instructor Philip McHugh. Seventh graders also completed their Hunter Safety Certification under the instruction of Deputy Boeger.
Brunswick students also shined individually: FFA members brought home several honors from the Missouri State Fair, including Addison Shipp’s Grand Champion Ewe and Callie Henke’s Champion Shorthorn Bull. Cross country runner Sawyer Barnett set a personal best, cutting more than 40 seconds from his 3,500-meter time to finish at 12:37.55.
Keytesville R-III
At Keytesville, 2024–25 yearbooks were distributed to students this week. FCCLA members are also fundraising, selling cinnamon rolls at Friday’s home football game against Knox County.
Thunder Football
The Thunder football team, a cooperative program between Brunswick, Keytesville, and Northwestern, kicked off their season with a home opener against Paris on August 29. Pep band and cheerleaders brought extra spirit to the stands. Local families and businesses, including Brunswick Auto Parts and the Dowells, have supported the team with pre-game meals and sponsorships, providing players with team shirts and new banners for the field.
Players are also drawing recognition beyond the local field, with a few Thunder athletes named to MissouriPrepSports.com’s watch list. The team will face Knox County next, with kickoff set for 7 p.m. Friday.
