Hegseth goes to Panama: Western Hemisphere security. A secure Western Hemisphere is the ultimate goal of the Central American Security Conference, to be held this year in Panama. But in everyone’s minds, lurks the recent statements by US President Donald J. Trump regarding the canal, one of the world’s most vital shipping lanes. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth will travel next week to participate in the conference. While Trump has expressed many times his interest in the Panama Canal, there are currently no specifics about how he would go about doing so, or if military action might be required.
