Two weeks after retaking Guevo, Russian forces overpower Ukrainians at the St. Nicholas Monastery and advance on the last settlement of Gornal. Back in August 2024, Ukrainian troops launched a surprise attack on largely unguarded border areas between the Sumy region and Russia’s Kursk oblast, proceeding to occupy as much as 500 square kilometers of enemy territory. While the sliver of conquered territory was meaningless in terms of actually winning the war, it is also true that it was a ‘shot in the arm’ boosting the Kiev regime’s enthusiasm and one of the greatest PR victories of the whole war so far, energizing the Western allies for a while.
