Proposed outdoor trials may involve spraying aerosols into the upper atmosphere or artificially brightening clouds to bounce sunlight back into space in order to help cool the earth. Another key focus of current research is on Sunlight Reflection Methods (SRM), which involve techniques like Stratospheric Aerosol Injection (SAI)—the process of dispersing fine particles high into the stratosphere to bounce a portion of sunlight back into space. A third approach under consideration is Marine Cloud Brightening (MCB), where vessels would release sea salt particles into the atmosphere to make low-altitude clouds more reflective.
