On August 1, 2025, President Donald Trump announced he had ordered two U.S. nuclear submarines to be deployed to “appropriate regions” in response to provocative remarks by former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. Medvedev had warned Trump to “remember” Russia’s Soviet-era nuclear capabilities after Trump issued a 10-day ultimatum for a ceasefire in Ukraine or face tariffs.
