In a series of text messages on August 8, 2022, Jones vented over state politicians mourning the death of former state legislator Joe Johnson Jr, a longtime centrist Democrat. In the text messages, obtained by National Review, Jones texted his outrage over the eulogies to his former colleague, Republican House Delegate Carrie Coyner.
