Between 2001 and 2016, the city recorded 8,229 homicides, surpassing total U.S. military deaths from Afghanistan (2,459 service members and 1,822 contractors) and Iraq (4,518 service members and 281 contractors), which together amounted to roughly 8,799 fatalities. Even from 2016 to 2020, another 3,276 people were killed in Chicago.
