Margie Ann Samuels passed away Friday, January 23, 2026 at Life Care Center in Carrollton.
Margie was born April 18, 1947, in Waverly, Missouri to Erving and Ruth (Fryer) Kalthoff. Margie grew up on the family farm in rural Bogard, MO and attended Bogard School from kindergarten through graduation in 1966.
After graduation, Margie married and settled with her family in Chillicothe in 1967. She considered herself very fortunate to work in the home, raising her children, Joe and Jennifer, until they became school aged. She held various part-time jobs in Chillicothe, but most enjoyed the tasks of being a mother and keeping her home. Margie had many hobbies and talents, including knitting, embroidery, and cake decorating. She was a talented artist and enjoyed playing cards and games. Margie was well known for her love of creating patterns and designs using an Etch-A-Sketch.
On a summer evening in 1990, Margie introduced herself to James (Jim) Samuels when she asked him to dance. From that time on, Margie and Jim were inseparable. They were frequent attendees at performances of the Krazy Kats and other live music shows where they could dance the evening away with the company of friends. On May 10, 1993, Margie and Jim were married in Las Vegas, Nevada. When Jim asked Margie about their wedding vows, her only request was to add the words “and have fun”, and fun is exactly what they had in their 35 years together.
Margie and Jim made their home near Carrollton, Missouri where they enjoyed a loving and quiet life. Margie was avid reader, filling her days with her books, keeping a close eye on her beloved cats, and filling the summertime hummingbird feeder near her kitchen window. A wonderful cook and baker, Margie was famous for her cookies, cheese balls at Christmas, her pimento cheese, and her grandson’s favorite spaghetti. Margie’s enduring legacy is her loving and kind heart. She was a gracious and accepting of all she knew and always wanted the best for everyone she loved.
Margie is survived by her beloved husband and best friend, Jim Samuels; son, Joe Cox (Dave Penn), of Topeka, KS; daughter Jennifer Grossman of Parkville, MO; step-daughter Candace Wood of Charlotte, NC; grandson Zach Grossman of Tina, MO; granddaughters Jessica and Keeley Wood, and great-grandson Anthony, of Charlotte, NC; sister and life-long best friend, Carolyn Nashan of Columbia, MO; niece Melody Nashan (Anna Lingo), and great-nieces Lydia and Eleanor Merkerson of Columbia, MO. Margie was preceded in death by her parents, and her parents-in-law, Clarence Earl and Melba Samuels.
In keeping with Margie’s wishes, there was a cremation and a private celebration of life will be held with family at a later time. Those wishing to honor Margie’s life may do so through memorial contributions to the Carrollton, Missouri Public Library care of Bittiker Funeral of Carrollton .
