Psalm 119:105-106

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. I have sworn and confirmed that I will keep Your righteous judgments.” With rare exceptions, outdoor lighting was virtually unknown in the ancient world. When darkness fell, pedestrians carried small terracotta oil lamps instead. Held in a person’s open palm, the lamp’s light shone upon the immediate path of their feet—a few steps at a time, yet always brightening the way.

Likewise, the light of God’s Word illuminates our way as the darkness of this world increases. As choices confront us and we’re unsure which direction to take, God’s Word brings clarity. It safeguards us against the whims of emotion that lure us to take muddy paths filled with ruts and holes. And its light pierces the fog that conceals sinful behavior and evil intentions meant to harm us or others.

When the psalmist said, “Your word is a lamp,” and “I have sworn” he was making definitive statements. There was no ambiguity or lack of determination on his part. He didn’t say the Word will guide me sometime in the future, or only if I feel it necessary. Scripture’s instruction is meant to be used personally, practically, and habitually. Yet, it is up to each of us to determinedly trust God and walk according to His Word.

When we allow God’s precepts, instructions, and commands to influence our thoughts, govern our tongues, order our actions, and change our hearts, we can walk confidently in every situation. We will not falter. We will not fall. Let us never venture out without heaven’s lamp illuminating our way.

Awaiting His Return,
