Gary Jewell “Swatty” Swafford, 67, of Norborne, passed away peacefully Sunday, November 30, 2025, at his home.

Gary was born on January 25, 1958, in Carrollton, the son of Orville and Darlene (Ross) Swafford.

Survivors include: two brothers, David (Bobbie Jo) Melton, Sr. of Bosworth and Adam Melton (Stacy Foster) of Independence; sister, Ellen Melton of Carrollton; special cousin, Mary Lawson (Bill Munson) of Norborne; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends also survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Terry Lynn Swafford, and several aunts and uncles.

Gary grew up in Norborne, where he spent most of his life and proudly graduated from Norborne High School. A true jack-of-all-trades, Gary could fix just about anything he put his hands on. He loved tinkering-whether it was something that needed repaired or something he just thought he could make better-and nothing was ever quite “good enough” until he added his own magic touch.

Throughout his life, Gary worked in construction, home remodeling, and any job that allowed him to be outdoors. He took great pride in caring for his yard and enjoyed spending time outside, often finding small projects to keep his hands busy.

Gary had a heart for helping others. He would drop everything to lend a hand, never expecting anything in return. He spoke openly and honestly, never afraid to share his thoughts-especially when his stubborn and strong-willed side showed.

He leaves behind the memory of a hardworking man who could do a little bit of everything, who loved to fix what was broken, and who was always there when someone needed him.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Gary Swafford Memorial Fund. They can be left at or mailed to Thurman Funeral Home, 507 East Main Street-P.O. Box 190, Richmond, MO 64085.

Visitation with funeral services will be held on Monday, December 15, 2025, at Thurman Funeral Home in Norborne, with visitation beginning at 1:00 P.M., with services to follow at 2:00 P.M. Burial will be in Fairhaven Cemetery, Norborne. Please remember to share your memories of Gary with the family by visiting www.thurmanfuneralhome.com.
