Betty was born on August 9, 1935, in Carrollton, Missouri, to Raymond and Emma (Herberger) Long. She attended a country school, Calloway School, for her first year. The family then moved to rural Bosworth, where she lived until her junior year of high school and later they moved back to Carrollton. After high school, she married Bill Schwermer in 1952. She and Bill had three children. Bill preceded her in death in 1986. She then married Ed Berry in 1990. Ed preceded her in death in 1997, leaving Betty with four bonus children. In 2003, Betty was united in marriage to Roger Weddle in Lexington, Missouri. He preceded her in death in 2024.
Betty worked as a waitress at Maibs Restaurant. She wanted to be at home more with her family, so she took a job as a secretary for Jack Denning at MFA Insurance. After 11 years, she wanted to have her own insurance business. Working for Farmers Insurance Agency, she successfully ran her business for 23 years and received many high awards during that time. She decided to retire and spend more time with her loving great-grandchildren. After her grandchildren started school, she went to work part-time at Letzig Group in Richmond. On her 80th birthday, she was hired by Oswald Crow Agency after they purchased Letzig Group.
Betty was an active member of Trinity United Church of Christ. She was the proud cofounder of C.A.R. and Sounds of the Heart. Betty was very community-minded, serving on the board of directors and as Vice President of Preferred Mutual Insurance Company, and on the education committee of the MAMIC. During her lifetime she adored being a mother, “MeMe,” great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother.
