Vernita “Neet” Tanner Hemme, 102, of Marshall, MO, died Saturday, December 20, 2025, at University Hospital and Clinics in Columbia.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 30, 2025, at Campbell-Lewis Funeral Home in Marshall with William W. Harlow officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, north of Marshall. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Born December 23, 1922, in Thomas Hill, MO, she was the daughter of the late Frank Matlock and Floy Mansfield Matlock. Neet graduated from Thomas Hill High School in 1941, and then attended St. Luke’s School of Nursing in Kansas City. In 1950, she married Ernest “Dick” Tanner who preceded her in death on June 23, 1963. Following Dick’s death Neet raised their children and was a homemaker. Once the kids got older, she worked in secretarial work for Dr. Searfoss’ Optometry Office and for the vice-principal of Marshall High School, and also worked as the administrator of the Georgia Brown Blosser Home for Women. In 1980, she married Hubert Hemme and he preceded her in death on May 24, 1991. Neet was a member of Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church until its closing, then joined Miami United Methodist Church and was currently an active member of First United Methodist Church in Marshall. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and volunteered with the American Cancer Society.
Survivors include three children: Doug Tanner (Barb) of Lee’s Summit, Dixie Hisle (Mike) of Marshall, and Miles Tanner of Columbia; four grandchildren: Jonathan Tanner, Ben Tanner (Shannon), Preston Hisle (Anne) and Lauren Barrett (Ty); nine great-grandchildren: Aiden Tanner, Lucas and Lenna Tanner, Ethan, Liam and Harrison Hisle, and Dean, Beau and Shane Barrett; as well as many nieces, nephews, and other extended family.
In addition to her parents and husbands, Neet was preceded in death by all of her siblings: Mary Kimbrough, Martha Day, Erma Dowell, Louise Land, Elda Day, Lois Land, and Willie Matlock.
