In celebration of a life well-lived, we honor Jerry Benjamin Smith, 85, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Born on August 4, 1941, in Amazonia, Missouri, Jerry was the beloved son of Edward and Doris Smith. Jerry’s journey through life was one marked by dedication, love, and an unwavering spirit.

Jerry’s childhood was spent in the heart of Missouri, where he attended school in Gower. It was there that he formed the foundation of a life built on hard work and integrity. On April 15, 1961, Jerry married the love of his life, Helen, in a beautiful ceremony in Bethany, Missouri. Together, they built a loving and supportive family, raising two daughters in Fleming, Missouri, Kathy Graham (Thomas) and Kelly Taylor, who became the center of Jerry’s world.

A devoted family man, Jerry was blessed with five grandchildren: Jamie Brabec (Nathan), Krystal Graham (Charlie), Toni Gaddis (Daniel), Alex Smith (Michelle), and Eric Berry (Melanie). His legacy further extends to his seven great-grandchildren, who brought him immense joy and pride.

Jerry’s professional life was a testament to his strong work ethic. He began his career working with farmers, a nod to his deep connection to the land and community. He later joined the Missouri Portland Cement Company, where he dedicated 28 years of service before retiring in November 2001. His colleagues remember him not only for his hard work but also for his camaraderie and good humor. An avid outdoorsman, Jerry found solace and excitement in the natural world. He was a proud member of the Ray County Bow Hunters Association, where he shared his passion for hunting with like-minded friends. Fishing and hunting trips, particularly those to the majestic landscapes of Colorado, were among his most treasured experiences. He enjoyed many years at Pecan Grove Campground in Warsaw, where he enjoyed fishing and cooking great meals with his many friends. Jerry also took great pride in his garden, especially his tomatoes, which he enjoyed canning and sharing with his neighbors.

Jerry was a man who knew how to find joy in the simple pleasures of life. Time spent in his garage, sharing a beer with his buddies while saying, “Let’s have one more,” was a ritual that brought laughter to many. Numerous fish fries, deer camps, and chili dinners were where you could find him creating memories with pals.

While Jerry is predeceased by his dear parents and his four siblings, Patricia Krout, Bob, Jack, and Sue Stade, his spirit and love continue to shine brightly through his surviving family members, including his devoted wife, Helen.

A celebration of life will be held at The American Legions, 312 South Clark St. in Richmond, Missouri, on August 22 from 1pm to 4pm.

As we reflect on Jerry’s life, we remember a man who lived with kindness, passion, and an enduring love for his family and friends. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
