In 2022, the U.S. Treasury and State Department designated Khatib for serious human rights abuses in direct response to the crackdown following Mahsa Amini’s death. Amini died from injuries sustained at the hands of police after her arrest for the “improper” wearing of a hijab. He was sanctioned alongside the Morality Police and other officials for complicity in violence against protesters.
