Psalm 16:11 “You will show me the path of life; in Your presence is fullness of joy; at Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”
Here in David’s prayer, a depth of confident assurance arises that is meant to excite the hearts of God’s people. The ungodly may wander through life fearful of what lies ahead, but we are not bound by such fears.
Jesus declared that He is that path by calling Himself “the way” (John 14:6). But Jesus also said that He is “the door” (John 10:9) by which we enter into the Father’s presence. When put together, it becomes clear that in Jesus we have the pathway to eternal life and the future glories of heaven itself. But we need not wait for heaven to experience its sweetness. God promises joy in our journey, today!
In this same psalm, David declared, “I have set the Lord always before me.” Always means exactly that—not sometimes, not only in good times, but every day. Spend time, face-to-face with the Lord, in His Word and prayer. Come to Him thirsty, and He will fill you with an abundance of His limitless joy. This life mixes gladness with sorrow, but joy acts as an antidote. It strengthens you to rise above the ever-changing winds of circumstance and their accompanying emotions. In God’s presence, you can experience satisfaction, gladness, rest, and a sense of calm assurance.
Scripture tells us that we are but strangers and pilgrims on the earth (Hebrews 11:13), yet our confidence as travelers is that we will ultimately receive the full benefits of heaven. I can’t wait for that day! But until then, may we practice the attitude of heaven above in our hearts as a light and witness to those around us.
