Dorothy Marie Carroll passed away on September 22, 2026, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri. Born April 18, 1943, Marie was the daughter of the late Patrick and Margaret Kellett Holmes. Marie was a 1961 graduate of Malta Bend High School. She treasured the many lifelong friendships made during her early years in Malta Bend. Following graduation, Marie moved to Kansas City, Missouri. She worked at Old American Insurance from 1961 through 1965. On June 27, 1964, she married Joseph (Joe) Carroll at St. Therese of the Little Flower Catholic Church in Kansas City. Marie lived in Marshall for most of her life and also spent several years in the Kansas City and Jefferson City areas. Throughout the years, Marie enjoyed her work at Missouri Valley College, the Marshall Inn, Marshall Habilitation Center, and the State of Missouri, retiring from the Missouri State Ethics Commission in 2009.
In her retirement years, Marie enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, friends, and traveling. She was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church and the Altar and Rosary Society in Marshall, Missouri.
Marie is survived by her seven children: Maureen Brown, Marshall, Missouri, Christine Neidt (Jeff), Lee’s Summit, Missouri, Bridget Carroll, Marshall, Missouri, Lisa Hartwig (Matt), Excelsior Springs, Missouri, Peggy Sherman (Randy), Marshall, Missouri, Tim Carroll (Kara), Overland Park, Kansas, Kevin Carroll, Rayville, Missouri; one sister, Patsy Holmes Benyo, Lee’s Summit, Missouri; eleven grandchildren: Benjamin Hartwig (Skylar), Maggie Jackson (Luke), Ellie Hartwig, Jack Neidt, Olivia Neidt, Nicholas Brown, Zoe Sherman, Hannah Brown, Caitlin Hartwig, Mimi Sherman and Sam Sherman; and many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her parents, Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Joe; and sisters, Jane Holmes and Ellen Malone.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 29, 2026, at St. Peter Church in Marshall. Rosary will be recited at 9:00 a.m. Tuesday, with visitation following from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, 7601 Blue Ridge Blvd., Raytown, Missouri 64138. Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Peter Catholic Church, and an online guestbook is available at www.campbell-lewis.com
