George Abaraonye The incoming president of the Oxford Union, George Abaraonye, has finally been removed from office. Abaraonye, who was supposed to lead the Union through this academic year, had celebrated the assassination of Charlie Kirk, using the phrase “Let’s fucking go” after he was killed. Following widespread pressure to step down from the role, Abaraonye submitted a motion of no confidence in himself with the hope of receiving a fresh mandate. He has repeatedly claimed that the efforts to remove him are motivated solely by racism. Posting on social media before the vote, Abaraonye argued that victory would show “true accountability and (reaffirm) that the Oxford Union must remain a place where students can make mistakes, apologise sincerely, and learn from them”.
