A routine pursuit by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) ended in tragedy as a fleeing suspect in a stolen van was struck and killed live on television. According to official reports and live helicopter footage from CBS Los Angeles, the chase began shortly after 8:30 p.m. when officers attempted to stop a white van reported stolen. The driver refused to yield and headed onto the busy northbound lanes of the 110 Freeway near the Avenue 43 exit in the Mount Washington/Chinatown area.
