Ruby Ann Curtis, 79, of Richmond, passed away Tuesday, April 21, 2026, at her home with her husband of 58 years by her side.
Ruby was born on September 30, 1946, in Vernon, TX, the daughter of Reuben “R.B.” and Cleo Ann (Adams) Durr. She was united in marriage to Douglas “Doug” Ray Curtis, Sr. of Altus, OK, on February 20, 1968; he survives of the home.
Additional survivors include: son, Derek Emerson Curtis (Christina Clark); daughter, Brandee Lucinda Curtis; and five grandchildren: Evee Newsome, Derek Lane Curtis, Daelyn Curtis, Danika Curtis, and Daxon Curtis; great-grandson, Easton Hutchings.
She was preceded in death by her parents, son, Douglas “Doogie” Ray Curtis, II, granddaughter, Lilliana Curtis Locker, four brothers, Charles, Billy, Raymond, and Jerry Durr, and sister, Linda Martone.
Ruby was raised and educated in the area of her birth. She met the love of her life while he was proudly serving his country at the Air Force base in Altus, Oklahoma. Following his service, the couple returned to his family farm, where they built a life centered around hard work, family, and community.
In addition to raising her family, Ruby worked outside the home at several local businesses, including Orbseal (now Henkel), Whitaker Cable, the 10-13 Diner, and JCPenney. She was perhaps best known and most beloved for her time as a cook at the elementary school in Richmond, where she touched the lives of countless children. Her talent in the kitchen made her just as well-known at home as she was at school.
Ruby was no stranger to hard work, also helping on the family farm, tending to the garden where she grew beautiful flowers, and assisting with responsibilities at the farm’s airport. Despite her many responsibilities, she always found time to enjoy life’s simple pleasures. She especially looked forward to annual float trips and cherished the time spent playing cards with her friends and family.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Hickory Grove Cemetery. They can be left at or mailed to Thurman Funeral Home, 507 East Main Street-P.O. Box 190, Richmond, MO 64085.
Visitation with funeral services will be held on Monday, April 27, 2026, at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond, with visitation beginning at 1:30 P.M., with services to follow at 2:30 P.M. Burial will be in Hickory Grove Cemetery, Richmond. Please remember to share your memories of Ruby with the family by visiting www.thurmanfuneralhome.com.
