Carl Allen Head, 46, of Kirksville, Missouri, passed away unexpectedly on May 14, 2026, while residing at Specialized Support Services in Kirksville.

Allen was born January 3, 1980, in Chillicothe, Missouri, to Rudy Head and Jeannine Head (Truitt).

Allen lived with severe physical and developmental disabilities throughout his life, but his life was defined far more by joy than limitation. He exceeded expectations from the very beginning, living longer and accomplishing more than many ever thought possible. Allen had a gift for making people laugh and a smile that could light up any room. Though he never wanted attention focused on himself, he deeply loved being around people and animals and never missed an opportunity to make someone smile.

Allen found happiness in life’s simple joys. He treasured his books and toys, loved bread and butter, enjoyed long bubble baths, and could often be found picking up a toy telephone to “talk” and make others laugh. His gentle spirit and loving heart left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.

Through Specialized Support Services, Allen was able to experience a full and meaningful life surrounded by an incredible community of caregivers and friends who loved him deeply. He enjoyed trips, festivals, neighborhood animals, favorite foods, and daily moments filled with care and companionship. His family is especially grateful for Ranee Davis, Patty Stewart, Russell Leedom, Don Ryland, Diana Steele, Logan Wannepain, Wendel Gerke (whom Allen lovingly called Grandpa), Sue Burns, and the many others whose kindness and dedication brought so much happiness and comfort into Allen’s life over the years.

Survivors include his sister, Lindsay Howerton and husband Tim Howerton of Overland Park, Kansas (affectionately known to Allen as “Jim”); nieces Maggie Howerton of Atlanta, Georgia, and Lyla Howerton of Overland Park, Kansas; aunt Lana Hoffmeyer; along with extended cousins and many caregivers throughout the years.

Allen was preceded in death by his parents, Rudy Head and Jeannine Head; grandparents Helen and Eldon Head and Helen and Arlo Truitt; and his beloved dog, Barney.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 21, 2026, at Purdin Cemetery, Purdin, Missouri, with Pastor David Blakely officiating. Services are under the direction of Rhodes Funeral Home, Brookfield.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Linn County Senate Bill 40, supporting individuals with disabilities, may be left at or mailed to Rhodes Funeral Home, 216 Linn Street, Brookfield, Missouri 64628. Online condolences may be made at www.rhodesfh.com.
