As the fall season winds down, Chariton County schools have been bustling with academic, extracurricular, and athletic achievements. Across the county, students and staff are celebrating accomplishments both in the classroom and on the field.
Brunswick R-II
Brunswick R-II recently hosted a Veterans Day Assembly on November 11th at 9:30 a.m., honoring all who have served. Families were invited to attend a breakfast reception at 8:30 a.m. prior to the assembly.
State cross country competitor Sawyer Barnett capped off a strong season, placing 27th at Districts and qualifying for the MSHSAA State Cross Country Championships. Fans were encouraged to cheer him on at Gans Creek in Columbia on November 8th.
The Wildcat scoreboard reflected success on the basketball court as well. On November 3rd, the Junior High Lady Cats fell to Milan, 48-51, while the JH Wildcats won 51-48. November 4th, the JH Lady Cats defeated Northwestern 56-33, and the JH Wildcats won 33-13. November 6th saw the JH Lady Cats top Hale 44-38, with the Wildcats also victorious. On November 7th, the Lady Cats triumphed 48-21 over St. Mary’s.
Brunswick students also shined in academics and extracurriculars. FFA Greenhand ceremonies welcomed new members, and the annual performance report (APR) score remained strong for the fourth consecutive year. Students participated in the 2025 Dr. Harold Momberg Math & Science Competition at Central Methodist University, earning 10th and 12th place overall. Varsity softball and basketball programs also held banquets and began practices.
Keytesville R-III
Keytesville R-III students engaged in hands-on learning, with fourth graders creating fossils using dough and plastic scorpions to explore cast, true form, trace, and mold fossils. Elementary students and staff dressed up for Halloween festivities, including a creative costume parade where teachers dressed as Elmer’s Glue.
October also saw the recognition of outstanding students through the ROARing Tigers program. Students earned certificates for demonstrating the characteristics of Respect, Optimism, Accountability, and Responsibility, without any discipline issues, office referrals, or late work. Those who earned the award in October were treated to an extra recess as a reward. Congratulations to all students for their hard work and dedication!
The junior high basketball teams traveled to Queen City, with games starting at 5 p.m., and admission consisting of a bottle of sports drink per person. Congratulations were extended to the junior high boys basketball team for a road win at Orrick, while the girls competed hard but fell short.
Upcoming events include a blood drive hosted by the National Honor Society on December 5th from 2-6 p.m. Tickets for the annual Drama Club play were sold at the door for the November 8th performance, with congratulations to students M’Lynne, Payton, Tucker, and Peyton for their involvement.
Northwestern R-I
Northwestern R-I celebrated strong cross country performances with Noah placing 32nd out of 175 runners at state, achieving a personal record of 17:42.2. District results included Noah 12th, Kypton 81st, and Madi 53rd among girls.
The junior high basketball teams participated in the Norborne Tournament on November 8th. Northwestern also hosted junior high games versus Keytesville, where the Lady Eagles won 23-15, and the boys won 27-15. Varsity basketball and cheer practices commenced for the season.
Northwestern students engaged in numerous classroom and extracurricular activities. Elementary students participated in a flag-building competition to raise funds for the American Legion Swan Lake Memorial Post. Fifth graders collected pajamas and new books for the 16th Annual Great Bedtime Story Pajama Drive. A STEM collaboration day challenged high school students to build pumpkin catapults, with Bryce, Kypton, and Case winning the top design. Students also enjoyed a haunted maze, reading buddy programs, and a visit from Buddy the Blue Corgi on November 25th. The district earned a top ten APR score statewide.
Salisbury R-IV
Salisbury R-IV celebrated achievements in both academics and athletics. High school students attended the Missouri FCCLA Fall Leadership Conference and participated in fundraising for Care to Learn.
Students competed in the Central Methodist University Dr. Harold Momberg Math & Science Competition, placing 8th and 9th out of 22 teams. The performance event challenged each team to create a slow-falling paper helicopter under 20 cm in size. Students toured Stedman Hall, observing an organic chemistry experiment, exploring the Marine Biology lab, and experiencing the virtual anatomy table. SES students participated in after-school tutoring programs, with registration required by November 19th.
Veterans were honored at a Veterans Day Assembly on November 11th. The high school football team faced Fayette on November 7th, with admission set at $6 per person. Junior high basketball games were available via Hudl links for fans unable to attend in person.
Thunder Athletics
The Thunder teams, representing a combined effort from Brunswick, Keytesville, and Northwestern, had an impressive fall season. Thunder football players earned numerous honors in the All-Conference selections. First-team All-Conference honorees included #11 Griffin Cramer (OL), #19 Case Reckamp (DL), and #10 Brody Mauzey (Punter). Second-team All-Conference players were #11 Griffin Cramer (DL), #19 Case Reckamp (OL), and #30 Trevin Manson (RB). All-Conference Honorable Mentions went to #20 Eliszah Sandoval (RB), #22 Luke Manson (LB), #25 Beau Linneman (OL & DL), and #30 Trevin Manson (LB).
The Thunder varsity softball team concluded the season with notable success and held their 2025 banquet to celebrate accomplishments. Thunder basketball preparations and junior high games aligned with the schedules and victories highlighted in their respective school districts, reflecting the collaborative strength of the Thunder program across Chariton County.
