KANSAS CITY – An 80-year-old Independence man could spend up to 10 years in federal prison for defrauding the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

The Western District of Missouri says James Lyon pleaded guilty to fraudulently obtaining over $124,000 in disability payments from the VA.

With his guilty plea, Lyon admitted to lying about being a decorated Marine who served in the Vietnam War. Lyon refused Marine Corps training as a conscientious objector in 1966, according to the news release. He also falsified an ALS diagnosis to seek disability compensation.
